WalkSafe+ explained: features, cost and alternatives (UK)

WalkSafe+ is a free UK personal safety app made by Chaperhome Ltd. It lets you share a journey or your live location with trusted friends, send them an SOS with your location after a 5-second countdown, and see a map of venues trained in schemes such as Ask for Angela. It alerts your friends, not the police, so if you are in danger call 999.

In danger now? Call 999

WalkSafe+ and similar apps alert people you choose; they do not call the emergency services. If you are in danger, call 999 (or 112). If you can’t speak, see how to make a silent 999 call.

What is WalkSafe+?

WalkSafe+ is a personal safety app from Chaperhome Ltd, a UK company founded in 2020. It combines journey sharing with trusted friends, an SOS button, a map of safety-trained venues and community reports about problems such as poor lighting. WalkSafe pitches it at anyone travelling alone: nights out, commuting, social activities and exercise.

Is the WalkSafe app free?

Yes. WalkSafe+ is free on the App Store, with no in-app purchases listed when we checked on 7 October 2026, and WalkSafe says people can use it with family and friends for free. The paid product is WalkSafe Pro, a service for employers that connects staff journeys to a 24/7 monitoring control room; prices are given on request.

What features does WalkSafe+ have?

WalkSafe lists these tools on its own website and App Store page:

  • HomeSafe: set a place and a time and share your journey plan with loved ones, without sharing your live location.
  • Follow Me: share your location for a length of time you choose, with friends you pick.
  • WalkSafe Journeys: your location updates in real time for your trusted friends while you travel.
  • SOS button: alerts all your trusted friends with your live location.
  • Safe Space Map: venues across the country trained in Ask for Angela, Best Bar None or Active Bystander.
  • Community reports: flag issues such as poor lighting, large crowds or restricted road access for other users.
  • Live night-time support: find street marshals, pastors or angels in your area.

How does the WalkSafe SOS work?

When you press SOS, WalkSafe+ shows a 5-second countdown so you can cancel. If you don’t, it sends an alert with your live location to your trusted contacts, who are advised to contact you and take steps to make sure you are safe. It does not call 999 or the police. For that, set up Emergency SOS on your iPhone or Android.

Do my contacts need the WalkSafe app?

Yes. WalkSafe’s FAQ says you must invite your trusted contacts to become friends in the app before journeys or SOS will work, because the alert is built for people who can respond in the app. If your family or friends won’t install it, sharing your live location with built-in phone tools may suit you better.

Is WalkSafe on Android?

Yes. WalkSafe’s FAQ says the app is on Google Play as well as the App Store, and Manchester City Council links to both stores. On iPhone it needs iOS 15.1 or later. We could not open the Google Play listing on 7 October 2026, so we have not stated which Android version it needs; check the listing before you install.

What does WalkSafe do with my location data?

WalkSafe says your location data is encrypted, shared only with the people or services you choose, and not sold to third parties. That is the company’s own statement, so read its privacy policy before you sign up, and stop sharing when you no longer need it. Never let anyone track you without your agreement.

Who works with WalkSafe in the UK?

On its website WalkSafe lists partners including c2c, Leeds Station, M&S, North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership and Mitie, and Manchester City Council promotes WalkSafe+ to residents as a free download. If your council, station or employer recommends it, check their own page to see what the local partnership includes.

What to weigh before you choose a walk-home app

Who gets the alert?

WalkSafe+, Hollie Guard and Safety App UK alert people you choose. Only your phone’s Emergency SOS calls emergency services.

Will your friends install it?

WalkSafe+ needs your contacts as friends in the app. An alert only helps if someone sees it.

Battery and signal

Every app needs a charged phone and a data connection. Carry a power bank on a long night out.

Cost now and later

Built-in phone tools are free; WalkSafe+ and Hollie Guard are free to download, and Hollie Guard Extra is paid.

What is WalkSafe Pro?

WalkSafe Pro is the paid workplace version. Employees can share their commute or an expected arrival time, and if they don’t arrive home on time an automatic alert goes to a 24/7 monitoring control room. Staff also get free WalkSafe+ for personal use. WalkSafe gives prices on request. For what employers must do, read our lone worker apps guide.
